Preparation¶
I wanted to do a light-weight preparation and I estimate to have put six hours of preparation in these three hours of teaching. Quite efficient I would say!
I did prepare well anyways, including making a YouTube movie. Including testing Zoom multiple times.
Teaching¶
Teaching went super smooth.
I took the time to repeat the goal of the session multiple times and to use a Prior to build rapport. At 9:18 I sent all learners to their breakout rooms. I had a teaching assistant that I already had instructed.
In the breakout rooms, there was a big variation in skills. Me and the teaching assistant had quite varied times we spent in the different rooms. Unexpectedly, some people did not know how to run R code yet, where I expected this to be done in the session before. I know that there was 1 learner that missed this earlier session, but I found this in 3 more learners to be the case too. This seems to me to hint that the first session was too theoretical.
Evaluation results¶
Copied from evaluation:
Were you able to create a simple plot?¶
- Yes: 6x
- No: 0x
I will call this a success score of 100%. I know one (absolute beginner) learner could not create a plot, which may indicate a bias for filling in the form if one can say 'yes' here.
Any other feedback?¶
- Interactive lecture +++
Great!
- Very hard to use R when not familiar to R before, but very good session
I am happy we could have this session, because of learners like this!
- Our teacher was pedagogical, enthusiastic, and wanted to include us students by asking questions.
Great to read this!
- His goal was for everyone to succeed in the task of developing a plot.
Correct! I am happy to hear back my goals :-)
- He was also concerned that we took breaks, which I appreciated.
Nice.
- I worked together with a classmate who was an expert in R. He was very helpful. For me, it was fantastic to work together with him.
Agreed, some groups were amazing indeed!
Conclusion¶
Again, everything was smooth. I had a proper chat with all the learners, the assistant and I worked together well, the course coordinator could do her work, and the evaluation results are only (boringly!) positive.
The only thing that could be improved, as far as I can see, is that the first session would be less theoretical.
